This is a pretty exciting trip for me. I’ve been to Dallas before, but this time we’re going for an Iron Butt Association social AND I should be receiving my official Iron Butt certificate and membership on Saturday evening.
For those not familiar with the Iron Butt Association (IBA for short), the group is for those crazy enough to find long distance motorcycle riding enjoyable. How long is long distance you may ask? Well, the shortest distance you need to qualify for membership is 1,000 miles in 24 hours. Yes, that says one THOUSAND miles. J I know, it’s a lot to take in, isn’t it?
Rally Partner (RP) has mapped out a route for us that is 1,110 miles and takes us from Colorado across Kansas, into Missouri, Oklahoma and finally to Dallas. Yes, that is 110 miles more than required, but I also have a goal to see all 50 states and I am darn close. This route will allow me to pick up two more states – Missouri and Oklahoma that I’ve never visited before.
We expect to be in Dallas on Thursday night and depending on how I feel, we will both do an additional 400 or so miles on Friday. We want to qualify for the next level ride, which is 1500 miles in 36 hours. I’ve had saddle sores before (more about that later) so if my body says thanks but no thanks to the additional miles, RP will be going it alone for the second leg. I really, really want to make that additional trip, so wish us luck! As icing on the cake, the 2nd leg of the trip takes us to Arkansas; another state I’ve never seen. How can I say no?
At any rate, I’m sure we’re going to have a great time and I am looking forward to making some new friends in the long distance community. Updates next week so I hope you will come back and see how this turns out!
